The Fanapi Foundation is pleased to announce the full funding of the Northwest Educators Summer Training (NEST) at Xavier High School on July 29 – August 2, 2013. The funding in the amount of $42,000 was committed by the Chuuk State Department of Education with $2,500 donated by the Matson Foundation will pay for the training facilities, room & board, support staff, training supplies, transportation expenses for the participants who will be traveling to Weno on chartered ships from the outer islands.
NEST aims to bring together 75 public school teachers and principals from all the elementary, junior, and high schools in the Northwest regions of Namonweito, Pafeng, and Pattiw which make up the Northwest Unified Schools. While residing in the dorms at Xavier High School for the duration of the 5-day conference, the educators will engage in a series of workshops, discussions, lectures, and classroom simulation exercises led by trained educators in the field of school administration (Vidalino Raatior, M.A., from the University of Hawaii at Hilo), ethical leadership development (Fr. Arthur Leger, S.J., Ph.D from the Ateneo de Manila University), and culturally-responsive school management and curriculum development (Dr. Margaret Cholymay, Ph.D from the University of Hawaii at Manoa).
One goal of the conference is to provide an integrated hands-on leadership development program specific to the needs in these public schools. Another is to build community and synergy among these educators so they may become effective leaders in the overall Chuuk State School System educational reform plans.
